In this edition we have turned over much The Other Oregon to our colleagues at Underscore News.

Underscore News is a nonprofit newsroom that covers Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest. Underscore has produced a series of stories exploring how the tribes of the region are working to reclaim their traditional foods.

Food is central to most every culture. The traditions surrounding the gathering and preparing of food are the ties that bind communities and families.

Native people have been part of rural Oregon since time immemorial. Over the centuries they learned to harvest, preserve and prepare the unique flora and fauna of the region. But many of these traditions were all but lost as the tribes were forced onto reservations and reduced to eating the strange commodities provided.

Happily, knowledge was retained by a few, and there is a robust effort to share that knowledge and re-establish the old ways.

Underscore’s stories provide an interesting and compelling reminder of the importance of food sovereignty and security in all of our lives. We are sure you will enjoy them.
